I'm Tired of Watching Good Businesses Throw Money Away (And Here's What's Actually Broken)
I'm Tired of Watching Good Businesses Throw Money Away. Let me paint you a picture I see all the time here in Roanoke.
A business owner - a contractor, a shop owner, a service provider, works their tail off for months. Things start clicking. A little extra cash shows up. And the first instinct is: let's run some ads.
So they throw a few hundred dollars at Facebook. Maybe TikTok. They boost a post. They wait. The phone doesn't ring. And they walk away convinced the platform is broken, social media is a scam, or that "this stuff just doesn't work for my kind of business."
None of that is true. The platform isn't broken. The strategy is: You can't paint a house that hasn't been built yet.
In my latest vlog, link below - I get into what I call Real World Marketing. It's not a framework I read in a book. It's what I've seen actually work for small businesses in the Star City and beyond. And the foundation of all of it is this: before you spend a dollar on ads, you need to know exactly who you're talking to, what problem you're solving, and why someone should choose you over the competitor two miles down the road. Most businesses can't answer all three of those clearly. That's not a knock, it's just honest. When you're running a business day to day, you don't always have time to step back and think strategically. That's exactly where outside eyes matter.
So let's work through it right now. Who are you actually talking to?
Not "everyone in Roanoke." Not "homeowners." Get specific. Are you talking to first-time homeowners overwhelmed by maintenance? Busy parents who need reliable service fast? Small business owners trying to look more established? The more specific your answer, the more your marketing sounds like it was written for one real person - and that's exactly when it starts converting.
What real problem are you solving?
Not the surface problem. The real one. A fence company doesn't just install fences, they give a homeowner peace of mind that their kids and dogs are safe in the yard. A bookkeeper doesn't just reconcile accounts - they give a business owner their weekends back. Dig one level deeper than the obvious answer and you'll find the message that actually moves people.
Why you, specifically?
This is the one most people skip, because it feels uncomfortable to talk about yourself. But your customers need a reason to choose you over a Google search full of competitors. Is it your response time? Your local roots? Your guarantee? Your process? Pick something true and own it. Vague doesn't convert. Specific does. Once you can answer those three questions cleanly, something shifts. Your website copy gets sharper. Your social posts get easier to write. And when you do run ads, they actually work, because now they're speaking directly to the right person about the right thing.
That's Real World Marketing. Not a magic trick. Just the right foundation before the spend.
Watch the full vlog below, I go deeper on each of these and walk through a real example of what this looks like in practice. And if you want to work through your foundation together, that's exactly what Novum's consulting is built for. Let's figure out your answers before you spend another dollar on ads that aren't ready to convert.
